HOUSTON - The University of Houston diving team will compete at the 2016 NCAA Division I Zone D Championship, in College Station, Texas from March 7-9. Competition on each of the three days begins at 11 a.m. CT at the Student Recreation Natatorium on the Texas A&M campus. All three Cougars will compete in the 1- and 3-meter springboards.
The Houston diving trio enters the NCAA Zone D diving competition after dominating the American Championships in February at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Natatorium. Each Houston diver captured conference titles and Senior Danielle Shedd was named the conference's Most Outstanding Female Diver.
Shedd looks to qualify for her first trip to the NCAA Championships. The senior was named to the All-Conference list in both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards after being crowned the 1-meter champion and grabbed a third place finish in the 3-meter event at the American Championships.
Taylor Olanski, the 2015 American Most Outstanding Female Diver, earned conference laurels after winning the platform dive for the third straight year. The London, Ontario, Canada, native last year placed fourth in the platform event at the Zone D diving competition earning her ticket to the NCAA Championships. The then sophomore placed 17th in the nation.
Sophomore Micaela Bouter is also in the hunt for her first appearance at the NCAA Championships. The Johannesburg, South Africa native had an outstanding regular season, earning four conference Diver of the Week laurels along with the 3-meter crown at the American Championships.
This event is one of five across the country that qualify divers for the NCAA Championships March 24-26 in Atlanta. The top five female divers from each event at their respective zone diving meet will earn a spot at the NCAA Championships. Additional place finishers in each event at each zone will be eligible based on the number of divers from that zone that finished in the top 16 at the previous year's NCAA Championships.
In the 1-meter the top six, the 3-meter the top nine and in the platform the top nine qualify for the NCAA Championships.
The Cougars will face familiar conference rivals, SMU and Tulane. Houston will also compete against divers from Arkansas, Arkansas-Little Rock, Iowa, Iowa State, Kansas, LSU, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Northern Iowa, South Dakota State, Texas A&M, TCU, Texas, and Wisconsin.
