HOUSTON - Seven members of the University of Houston Swimming & Diving team were chosen as All-Conference honorees by the American Athletic Conference, the league office announced Friday. Swimmers Ashley Grijalva, Hannah Herbst, Eleanna Koutsouveli and Jasmine Williams were joined by divers Micaela Bouter, Taylor Olanski and Danielle Shedd on the postseason list.
"I am proud of the athletes selected as All Conference for 2015-2016," head swimming and diving coach Ryan Wochomurka said. "As we continue our ascent up the ranks within the league, I am eager to see that list grow by leaps and bounds in the coming years."
Koutsouveli led the Cougar contingent after sweeping the backstroke events and placing third in the 400-yard IM at the American Championships in the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center last week. The freshman was second with 56 individual points earned, four points behind American Swimmer of the Year Jaqueline Kiere from Cincinnati. The Athens, Greece, native set school records in both the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke events with times of 54.32 and 1:56.15, respectively.
The conference's Most Outstanding Diver, Shedd was named to the conference list in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving. The Converse, Texas, native was crowned the 1-meter champion and grabbed a third place finish in the 3-meter event.
Herbst grabbed two conference honors after winning the 500-yard freestyle and finishing third in the 1,650-yard freestyle. Last week, the Scottsdale, Ariz., native captured Houston's first conference win in a swimming event since 2010. Herbst also set a new school record in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 16:32.45.
Olanski, the 2015 American Most Outstanding Diver, earned conference laurels after winning the platform dive for the third straight year. The London, Ontario, Canada, native won the event with a score of 237.65
Grijalva was named All-Conference after placing third in the 100-yard backstroke and improving her school-record time to 1:01.66.
Williams earned her first All-Conference laurel after rounding out the podium in the 100-yard backstroke. The Orange Park, Fla., native touched the wall at 55.03 to capture the bronze for the third best time in program history.
Bouter, Olanski and Shedd each won American All-Conference honors in 2015.
