HOUSTON -- The Houston Cougar women's tennis team swept a pair of matches on Saturday, defeating Prairie View A&M 4-0 in the morning, before coming back in the afternoon to defeat Southern 4-0 at the John E. Hoff Tennis Center, on Saturday.
The Cougars opened with a successful round of doubles play against Prairie View with a 3-0 sweep against the Panthers. The duo of Tina Rupert and Maria Cardenas cruised to a 6-0 victory over Trinity Randolph and Timara Maxwell on court two, while Despoina Vogasari and Rocio Martin followed shortly after with a 6-0 win of their own over Neharika Rama and Stacy Lackey. Although the point was already secured, Angela Lorenzo and Marnie Stokes would go on to defeat Maria Lackey and Sydney Thomas 6-1.
Vogasari picked up right where she left off in doubles play and breezed her way through singles action against the Panthers with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Rama to bring the score to 2-0 Houston. From there, Lorenzo picked up the next Cougar point with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Shaddae Findley, before Martin beat Lackey 6-1, 6-1 to secure the match for the Coogs.
Cougars were winning all over the courts when the match was halted as Rupert led Thomas 6-1, 4-0, Cardenas Led Randolph 6-1, 4-2 and Stokes led Maxwell 6-4, 0-1.
Just hours later the Cougars were back on the courts for doubles play against the Jaguars, but it was more of the winning ways from Houston. Again the Cougars would sweep the doubles point after jumping ahead with a Rupert and Cardenas 6-2 win over Mia Kent and D'Jeri Raymond on court two. Court three would follow with a 6-3 win from Lorenzo and Stokes over Nicki Neal and Laura Syori, and with the doubles point already decided Vogasari and Martin defeated Darnesha Moore and Rufaro Chirewa 6-3 to complete the sweep.
The Cougars would earn the first singles point from Cardenas playing at the No. 5 singles spot. Cardenas cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Kent to secure the point. Lorenzo would follow shortly after with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Neal to put the Cougars on the brink of victory.
With Cougars winning on five of the six courts, the match was sealed when Martin completed a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Chirewa to give the Cougars the 4-0 lead and halt the match. Despite the match being clinched, Vogasari led Syori 7-5, 4-1 on court one, while Rupert led Moore 6-2, 4-2 on court two. Stokes trailed Raymond 7-5, 0-1 when the match was stopped.
