HOUSTON â€" Senior Forward Tyler Gilbert scored a season-high 16 points, and collected eight rebounds as the Houston Cougar Women's Basketball team fell 76-37 against No. 1/1 UConn on Friday, inside Hofheinz Pavilion.
"Geno Auriemma is one of the class acts of women's basketball and what he represents. Some of the things he said to me before and after the game I really appreciated it," Head Coach Ronald Hughey said. "For our team to come out against the number one team in the country and play like that for two and a half quarters, we did a hell of a job. I'm so proud of Tyler Gilbert and the rest of my team. They were able to come in and follow the game plan and play with heart. We talked about representing and playing for the name across their chest more than the name across their back, and they did that and represented us well tonight."
The Cougars jumped out to an early 8-4 lead as the Houston defense forced the Huskies to miss their first five shots from the field. The Coogs took a 15-14 lead into the second quarter behind Tyler Gilbert's 4-of-4 start from the field, marking the first time the Huskies have trailed after the first quarter this season.
