Cougars Fall on the Road at Wisconsin

Madison, Wis. â€" The No. 44 Houston Cougar women's tennis team continued their season-opening road trip with a 6-1 loss to the Wisconsin Badgers on Friday, in Madison, Wis.
The Badgers began the day by securing the doubles point with wins on all three courts. Tina Rupert and Despoina Vogasari were the first to fall, dropping their match 1-6 to Lauren Chypyha and Kendall Kirsch. Court three was the next to finish as Maria Cardenas and Mina Markovic were defeated by Lauren Burich and Kelsey Grambeau 2-6.
Despite the doubles point being won, Rocio Martin and Angela Lorenzo continued to battle for Houston, but eventually fell in a tie-breaker to Ekaterina Stepanova and Sydney Rider 5-6 (7-4).
Markovic put Houston on the board by grinding out a win on court three. The sophomore took the first set 6-3, but dropped the second set 2-6 to Kirsch. However, Markovic would dominate the final set, defeating Kirsch 6-1 to earn the point.
The Badgers gained their next three points by claiming victories on courts one, two and four. Rupert's match ended first as the junior fell 3-6, 2-6 to Stepanova on court two. Court four followed as Maria Avgerinos defeated Martin 6-4, 6-0. Wisconsin secured the match with a victory on court four as No. 34 Vogasari and No. 66 Chypyha battled on court one with Chypyha emerging with a 7-5, 6-3 victory.
Wisconsin won the final two points by claiming victories on courts five and six in a pair of matches that went down to the wire. Cardenas dropped a tough match on court six to Burich 4-6, 6-7 (7-4), while Rider and Lorenzo battled to a 6-0, 3-6, 6-4 victory for Rider on court five.
UP NEXT FOR HOUSTON
The Cougars will be back in action on Sunday, Jan. 31 as they travel to Chicago, Ill., to take on No. 41 DePaul. First serve in that match is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Gifts to the Center Court Club provide financial support directly to the University of Houston Tennis program for needs beyond the program's operating budget. Revenue generated from the Center Court Club is used at the discretion of the Head Coach for program enhancements. Membership in the Center Court Club is annual and requires a minimum $100 gift.

For a minimum gift of $500, supporters receive a team poster and a signed tennis ball, private practice invitation and a stadium blanket.
US OPEN
For a minimum gift of $1,000, supporters receive a team poster and a signed tennis ball, private practice invitation, a stadium blanket, fleece jacket and a lesson from the coach.
GRAND SLAM
For a minimum gift of $2,500, supporters receive a team poster and a signed tennis ball, private practice invitation, a stadium blanket, fleece jacket, a lesson from the coach and a group lesson from the coaching staff.
