Cougars Comeback Falls Short At DePaul

The University of Houston tennis team dropped a hard-fought, 4-3 decision to the DePaul Blue Demons falling just short in a decisive tiebreaker in Chicago, Ill., on Sunday.
The Blue Demons opened the match by overtaking the Cougars in two close doubles matches. The team of Rocio Martin and Maria Cardenas were defeated by Rebecca Mitrea and Milica Tesic 4-6 on court two, while Angela Lorenzo and Mina Markovic fell to Zaina Sufi and Jarret Fisher 3-6 on court three. Despoina Vogasari and Tina Rupert were neck-and-neck on court one against Patricia Lancranjan and Maria Cozac at 4-4 when the doubles competition ended.
The Cougars rallied in singles competition earning all three points in solo play. Cardenas triumphed over Tesic on court five, while Martin defeated Fisher on court six. Each of those matches finished with a final score of 6-2, 6-2. Markovic claimed victory to help the Cougars even the score after coming from behind to defeat Sufi 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 on court three.
Lorenzo was the first Cougar to fall in singles losing to Mitrea 1-6, 1-6 on court four, while Rupert lost 7-6(3), 6-4 in a tight match against Lancranjan on court two.
Vogasari and Cozac were the last competitors fighting with the overall team score tied 3-3. Despite falling in the first set 1-6, Vogasari battled back to take set two 6-1 against Cozac. The two would square off in an intense battle in the tie break, however Vogasari fell 7-6 (3) to seal the match for DePaul.
UP NEXT FOR HOUSTON
After a 5-match road trip to open the spring season, the Cougars will return to Houston to prepare for the first home match of the year against Arizona on Friday, Feb. 5. First serve is scheduled for noon at John E. Hoff Courts.

For a minimum gift of $1,000, supporters receive a team poster and a signed tennis ball, private practice invitation, a stadium blanket, fleece jacket and a lesson from the coach.
GRAND SLAM
For a minimum gift of $2,500, supporters receive a team poster and a signed tennis ball, private practice invitation, a stadium blanket, fleece jacket, a lesson from the coach and a group lesson from the coaching staff.
