Shedd Wins 1-Meter to Conclude Quad Meet

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. â€" Senior Danielle Shedd won the 1-meter dive Saturday afternoon, adding to Houston's eight podium finishes to conclude the Arkansas Quad Meet at the University of Arkansas Natatorium.
Overall in the dual meet style, Houston fell to No. 24 Arkansas, 221-122 and Vanderbilt by a close score of 176-164.
"We battled very hard today and came up just a little short against Vanderbilt," said head swimming and diving coach Ryan Wochomurka. "It's certainly disappointing to lose a closely contested meet, but I'm proud of our resilience on the road under adverse conditions."
Shedd captured her second 1-meter title of the season, with a score of 296.40 against tough SEC competitors. Shedd's best dive came in her second dive forward 2 ½ somersault pike, which earned her a score of 57.20. Sophomore Micaela Bouter earned her second podium in as many days, rounding out the podium with an overall score of 291.15.
"The divers were on this morning during the one-meter competition," said head diving coach Bob Gunter. "Danielle (Shedd) started off fantastic with two spectacular opening dives and held on for a win over Arkansas's Shelby Bartlett in her home pool."
The Cougars opened day two with a second place finish in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of Eleanna Koutsouveli, Ashley Grijalva, Sharo Rodriguez and Doroteja Bednjanec swam the event in a time of 1:45.45.
A pair of freshman captured podium finishes for the Cougars. Hannah Herbst earned her second podium of the meet in the 400-yard IM. The Scottsdale, Ariz. native, placed third overall with a time of 4:40.14. In the 200-yard backstroke, Koutsouveli finished second with a time of 2:03.61.
Sophomore Caitlin Horner grabbed a second place finish in the 100-yard freestyle, with a time of 4:40.14.
In the 200-yard breaststroke, Ashley Grijalva rounded out the podium. The sophomore swam the event with a time of 2:23.53.
Senior Maya Owens was the top finisher for the Cougars in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 57.75. Houston native Delia Weber placed fourth in the 500-yard freestyle, the highest placed Cougar in the event, with a time of 5:03.72.
Houston finished the meet with a podium finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The team of Horner, Doroteja Bednjanec, Owens and Michaela Hamrick placed third overall, with a time of 3:34.77
"We continue to see progress," Wochomurka said. "We are eager to race at home again next week and for the AAC Championships."

The Cougars will host LSU, Rice and Tulane for their final meet of the regular season, Jan. 29 & 30 at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center. The Cougars will honor five seniors, swimmers Doroteja Bednjanec, Holly Criscuolo, Taylor Derevyanik, Maya Owens and diver Danielle Shedd, Saturday Jan. 30.
COUGARS TO HOST AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP
Houston will host the American Athletic Conference Championships for the first time as the best swimmers and divers in the league visit the CRWC from Feb. 17-20, 2016. Following the conference meet, the Cougars will look to close the season at the NCAA Championships, to be held March 17-19, 2016 in Atlanta.
