Bouter Wins Three-Meter Dive at Quad Meet

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Sophomore Micaela Bouter grabbed her third three-meter victory Friday night, adding to Houston's 11 top-five finishes on the first day of the Arkansas Quad Meet at the University of Arkansas Natatorium.
After day one of the four-team dual meet-styled event, Houston leads Clemson by a count of 150-8 and trails Vanderbilt by a score of 98-81 and No. 24 Arkansas, 139-46.
"We raced hard tonight, and are in a tight battle with Vanderbilt," said head coach Ryan Wochomurka. "We came up short on in a few close races, but there were some great highlights."
Bouter grabbed the top spot in the three-meter dive for the third time this season. The Johannesburg, South Africa native dominated the competition with a score of 307.30, an 8 point lead on second place.
"The divers were great tonight," said diving coach Bob Gunter. "Micaela (Bouter) was consistent, she put away two of her more difficult dives. Danielle (Shedd) was only one dive away from having a spectacular meet. They should both have great performances tomorrow on the three-meter."
The Cougar's started the night with a fifth place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The team of Caitlin Horner, Doroteja Bednjanec, Maya Owens and Michaela Hamrick with a time of 1:37.51.
Houston grabbed four of the top-five finishes in the 1000-yard freestyle. Freshmen Delia Weber and Hannah Herbst grabbed two podium finishes placing second and third, respectively. Teammates Conor Glenn and Rachel Hobbins followed in fourth and fifth, rounding out the top-five.
In the 200-yard freestyle, Weber was the highest placed Cougar in the event. The Houston native finished seventh, with a time of 1:55.81.
Freshman Eleanna Koutsouveli finished second in the 100-yard backstroke, with a time of 57.35.
Sophomore Ashley Grijalva placed fourth overall in the 100-yard breaststroke, with a time of 1:05.04.
The Cougars had a pair of top-five finishes. In the 100-yard butterfly, sophomore Sharo Rodriguez rounded out the top-five, with a time of 2:07.66. Sophomore Horner grabbed fifth in the 50-yard freestyle, with a time of 24.60.
In the final event of the evening, the Houston relay team of Koutsouveli, Grijalva, Rodriguez, Horner placed fourth overall in the 400-yard medley relay, with a time of 3:53.68.
"We are swimming right at our season bests so that is encouraging as we begin to rest in the coming weeks for the conference meet," Wochomurka said. "We should come out a little sharper tomorrow morning, after having a better understanding of the facility and flow of the meet."

The Cougars are back in the water tomorrow for the last day of the Arkansas Quad Meet. The first event starts at 10 a.m. Saturday's Events: 200 Medley Relay, 400 IM, 100 Freestyle, 200 Backstroke, 100 Butterfly, 500 Freestyle, 3 Meter Dive, 200 Breaststroke, 400 Freestyle Relay.
COUGARS TO HOST AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP
Houston will host the American Athletic Conference Championships for the first time as the best swimmers and divers in the league visit the CRWC from Feb. 17-20, 2016. Following the conference meet, the Cougars will look to close the season at the NCAA Championships, to be held March 17-19, 2016 in Atlanta.
