HOUSTON - Houston cornerback William Jackson III has been named The American Athletic Conference's Defensive Player of the Week while quarterback Greg Ward Jr. was named to the league's weekly Honor Roll for their performances in Houston's 59-14 win over Texas State.
Jackson's honor is the third American Player of the Week award for the Houston program this season as Ward and Brandon Wilson were named the league's Offensive and Special Teams Players of the Week, respectively, following Houston's 34-31 win at Louisville. Monday's honor marks the second American Player of the Week in Jackson's career.
Jackson recorded his second career defensive touchdown when he intercepted and returned a Texas State pass 35 yards to extend Houston's lead to 42-7 with 44 seconds left in the first half. Jackson recovered his third career fumble in the first quarter, ending Texas State's opening drive.
Ward, who received a Manning Award Star of the Week earlier on Monday, earned the honor roll mention after accounting for six total touchdowns Saturday night with a career-high four passing touchdowns and two rushing touchdowns in 39 minutes of action, leaving the game with six minutes left in the third quarter.
Ward narrowly missed his second 100-yard rushing game of the year, finishing the night with 91 yards rushing on 10 carries and 274 passing yards on 17-of-21 passing. Ward distributed his four touchdowns to three different receivers â€" Demarcus Ayers (2), Chance Allen and Steven Dunbar.
Houston returns to action this Saturday when it travels to Tulsa for its first American conference showdown of the season. The game kicks off at 11 a.m. CT and will air on CBS Sports Network and KPRC 950 AM.
