Day 3
Rain Halts Final Day of Rice Invitational

HOUSTON -- Rainy weather washed away singles matches on the final day of the Rice Invitational, held at the George R. Brown Tennis Center. Among University of Houston Tennis student-athletes, only Rocio Martin and Tina Rupert were able to post a result, winning their final doubles match of the event.
Martin and Rupert defeated Baylor's tandem of Gabriela Ferreira and Theresa Van Zyl, 6-4. With the victory, the Houston duo finished the tournament with a 2-1 record.
No singles matches were completed on the final day of the event, as rain stopped the proceedings with Martin, Rupert and No. 42 Despoina Vogasari on the court. Vogasari was scheduled to face No. 48 Breaunna Addison of Texas in a much-anticipated clash for the No. 1 Singles flight championship, while Martin and Rupert both had consolation matches that were cancelled.
Despite the weather issues, Houston's time at the Rice Invitational was a resounding success in Head Coach Courtney Steinbock's debut tournament. The Cougars won eight of their 12 completed matches, with Vogasari posting a 3-0 record. The junior has now won six of her last seven matches dating back to last season, along with 10 of her last 11 fall season matches.
The opening tournament of the fall season also continued momentum that Martin and Rupert carried over from the spring. Dating back to last season, the duo has combined to win five of their last seven doubles contests, including victories over opponents from Baylor, SMU and UConn.
