Cougars Open Conference Play with East Carolina

HOUSTON â€" The Houston Cougar women's soccer team enters 2015 American Athletic Conference action when they host East Carolina on Thursday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m., at Carl Lewis Field.
Houston begins conference play riding a three-match winning streak and as winners of four of their last five contests. The Cougars are now 4-1 at home this season and have won four straight matches at Carl Lewis Field since dropping their home opener against Texas State on Aug. 21.
Three Cougar forwards sit atop the leaderboards for the Cougars in goals this season, as senior Lexa Green, sophomore Selena Peters and freshman Desiree Bowen all have three goals apiece. Green and Peters also rank tied for the team lead in points with seven each.
Bowen has scored all three goals despite just logging 90 minutes of action through six games played. Her score in Houston's most recent match against Louisiana-Lafayette on Sunday, Sept., 20 earned her American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week honors on Sept. 21.
Senior goalkeeper Jordan Brown turned in a stellar non-conference campaign in which she finished with three consecutive shutout victories and has held opponents scoreless in four of the team's last five matches. Brown has saved 30 shots on 41 chances and has a 1.38 goals-against-average on the season. The League City, Texas, native earned a spot American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll for her shutout victory over Louisiana-Lafayette.
ABOUT EAST CAROLINA
East Carolina comes to Houston sporting a 5-4-1 non-conference record. The Pirates most recently split a weekend series, falling to UNC-Wilmington 2-0 before defeating Old Dominion 1-0. ECU is 2-3-0 in road matches in 2015.
Junior forward Lana Spitler leads the East Carolina offense after scoring four goals and three assists, and her 13 points are more than double the second most on the team (Kendall Frey, 6 points). Spitler has logged 42 shots, with 24 landing on goal for a .571 shots-on-goal percentage, and has scored the game-winning goal in two of the Pirates' five games.
Senior goalkeeper Saundra Baron has seen all 956 minutes of game action for East Carolina in 2015. Baron has stopped 29 shots on 40 chances and has a 1.04 goals-against-average this season. Baron has recorded shutouts in all five of the Pirates' wins this year.
UP NEXT FOR HOUSTON
The Cougars return to action on Sunday, Sept. 27 when they host Cincinnati at Carl Lewis Field. Cincinnati went 5-2-3 during the non-conference season and will open conference play in Dallas against SMU at 7 p.m., on Thursday, Sept. 24.
