Fellow senior Blair Hamilton was tied for seventh at even par. The Burlington, Ontario, Canada, native sank an eagle on the par-5 second hole and added two more birdies in the First Round to finish at 1-under-par 71 and enjoy the Cougars' low score of the round.
Martino, who prepped at Southlake Carroll High, was tied with UCLA's Patrick Murphy for fourth place. Illinois' Thomas Detry held the first-day lead at -4 with Virginia's Danny Walker and Charlie Danielson tied for second at -2.

NORTHERN INTERCOLLEGIATE HISTORY
This marks the third straight season in which the Cougars have competed at the Northern Intercollegiate. A year ago, Houston finished fifth as then-junior Vincent Martino posted a score of 1-under-par 215 for a career-best second-place finish.
In 2013-14, the Cougars enjoyed a third-place team showing as eventual All-American Roman Robledo captured his first of four individual titles that season with a score of 5-under-par 211. Then-sophomore Blair Hamilton opened that tournament with a 67 and finished eighth at even-par 216.
UP NEXT
Following the Northern Intercollegiate, the Cougars return to action when they compete at the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate presented by Graeme McDowell on Sept. 28-29 at Shoal Creek in Birmingham, Ala.
From there, the team heads west to take part at the Utah Invitational on Oct. 5-6 at The Jeremy Golf and Country Club in Salt Lake City, Utah.
