Houston Picked Second in The American West
8/4/2015 12:00:00 AM | Football

HOUSTON â€" Entering its first season with head coach Tom Herman at the helm, Houston was picked to finish second in the west division in the 2015 American Athletic Conference preseason poll by media from across the league.
Houston received 10 first-place votes for the west division, and finished just four points behind 2014 American champion Memphis, who received 13 first-place votes, and who the Cougars defeated 28-24 last season in Memphis. The loss was Memphis' lone home loss of the season and its lone conference loss of 2014, extending Houston's winning streak in the series to five games. The two teams meet this season on Nov. 14 at TDECU Stadium in Houston.

American newcomer Navy received seven first-place votes in the west division to rank third in the preseason poll. Tulane, SMU and Tulsa round out the preseason predictions in the west.
Cincinnati and UCF, both 2015 Houston opponents, hold the first two spots in the east division. The two are followed by Temple, East Carolina, USF and UConn, the latter Houston's final road game of the season on Nov. 21.
The winner of each division will meet in the first American Championship game on Saturday, Dec. 5, at the site of the divisional champion with the best record in conference games.
If the two divisional champions have the same conference record, then the regular-season head-to-head winner between the divisional champions would host the championship. If the divisional champions have the same conference record and did not play in the regular season, then the team with the better overall regular-season record would host the championship.
