Houston Softball Advances to Semifinals

ORLANDO, Fla. - Led by junior LHP Julana Shrum, Houston Softball shutout the University of Memphis, 1-0, to advance to the semifinals during the 2015 American Athletic Conference Softball Championship at UCF Softball Complex.
Houston advances with a 28-26 season record while Memphis closes the season with a 19-34 overall record.
Shrum (13-10) picked up the win for Houston in her seventh shutout of her career. The southpaw went 7.0 innings, allowed on three hits, a walk and recorded one strikeout. Shrum is now 3-1 when giving up three hits or fewer in complete games pitched.
The Cougars jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when freshman outfielder Kaylin Crumpton drew a one-out walk and moved to second on a groundout by Selena Hernandez. Sophomore Shelby Miller knocked a base hit into left field, scoring Crumpton.
Houston is now 12-7 when scoring in the first inning and 17-11 when scoring first.
UP NEXT
Houston continues postseason play as the Cougars advance to the semifinals tomorrow at 3 p.m./2 p.m. (CT). The Cougars will face the winner of Game Two (Tulsa/UConn).
