Shrum Leads Cougars to Win Over Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Houston Softball closed out the 2015 regular season with a 6-1 victory over Memphis on Senior Day at Tiger Softball Complex.
The Cougars improved to 27-26 on the season and 10-7 in conference play to secure third place while Memphis dropped to 19-33, 6-12. Houston is now 6-6 when playing on Sundays.
Junior southpaw Julana Shrum (12-10) led the charge as she threw six shutout innings and retired 21 straight batters dating back to game one of Saturday's doubleheader. She didn't allow an earned run for the third straight game and 13th time this season.
The Houston offense got things started early, as the Cougars put up six runs in the first inning. Junior Katie St. Pierre led off with a single to centerfield and moved to third on a base hit bunt laid down by freshman Kaylin Crumpton. The following pitch, Crumpton stole second while senior Selena Hernandez loaded the bases with a four-ball walk.
Memphis' Katie Brignac gave the Cougars their first two runs as she walked sophomore Shelby Miller and junior Courtney Klingler to bring in the runs. Senior Tiffani McKnight slapped a two-run double down the rightfield line, scoring Miller and Klingler. She came in to score when senior Kayla Holland hit a single into the outfield, but the Cougars rally ended when she was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double.
From there, both teams were scoreless until the bottom of the sixth. Memphis picked up a run off two base hits and an error. But the Cougars held on to earn the win, 6-1.
UP NEXT
Houston Softball travels to Orlando, Fla., for the 2015 American Athletic Conference Championship next weekend. First round games begin on Thursday, May 7. Houston will face Memphis in game one of the tournament on Thursday at 11 am/10 am CT.
