HOUSTON -- Several members of the Houston Swimming & Diving Team have taken advantage of opportunities to compete in recent international meets and are making the most of the collegiate offseason. Rising sophomores Sharo Rodriguez and Micaela Bouter have already had success in their home countries, while rising junior Taylor Olanski is getting set to appear on the international stage.
Rodriguez recently completed a tremendous run through the Olimpiada Nacional 2015 (Mexican National Meet) in Nuevo Leon, Mexico. The 2015 All-American Athletic Conference selection competed in six events and earned podium spots in two. Rodriguez placed second in the 17-18 age group in the 100-meter butterfly with a swim of 1:02.36, and she also finished second in her age group in the 200-meter butterfly, swimming the race in 2:18.61.
With the second place finishes, Rodriguez will represent Mexico and the University of Houston in both events at the 2015 World University Games, to be held July 3-14 at the Nambu University International Aquatics Center in Gwangju City, South Korea.
Bouter recently took part in the South Africa Senior National Aquatic Championships in Durban and posted two strong performances. The 2015 All-American Athletic Conference honoree finished second in the nation in both the 1-meter and 3-meter dives.
Bouter also hit South Africa's required score in the 1-meter dive, making her a candidate to represent her home nation in both the World University Games and the 2015 FINA World Championships, which run July 24 -- August 9 in Kazan, Russia. SwimSA, the governing body of the sport in South Africa, will choose their representatives later this month.
Olanski, the 2015 American Diver of the Year, will compete in the 3-meter contest at the Diving Plongeon Canada 2015 Summer Senior National Championships. The event will be held on Friday, May 8 at the Saanich Commonwealth Place in Victoria, British Columbia.
