LeCANTO, Fla. - University of Houston senior Kyle Pilgrim fired a 2-under-par 70 for the second straight round to finish in a tie for eighth place and lead the Cougars during the final day of the American Athletic Conference Championships on The Quarry Course at Black Diamond Ranch on Monday afternoon.
Pilgrim played a bogey-free round on Monday on the 7,025-yard, par-72 course. The Colleyville, Texas, native sank his first birdie of the day on the 332-yard, par-4 seventh hole and added his final birdie on the par-4 12th hole for a 54-hole score of 213. It was his third straight top-15 finish and a career-best finish at any conference championships event.
As a team, the Cougars recorded a score of 291 and fell to fourth in the final standings with a score of 866. No 18 USF won the team championship with a score of 837 to finish 13 strokes ahead of No. 29 SMU. UCF finished third at 856 with Memphis (869), Cincinnati (876), East Carolina (881), Tulsa (883), UConn (893) and Temple (906) rounding out the field.
Senior All-American Roman Robledo posted an even-par 72 for the second straight round and finished in a tie for 10th at 214. With his performance, the Harlingen, Texas, native recorded his fourth straight top-10 finish at a conference championships during his outstanding career.
After posting a bogey and double-bogey through his first seven holes, Robledo rallied to sink four birdies over his final 11 holes.
Making his American Athletic Conference Championships debut, freshman Alan De Bondt tied for 18th at 218. The Antwerp, Belgium, native wasn't slated to compete in this event but was forced into the Cougars' starting lineup when junior Blair Hamilton was sidelined Sunday morning with a back injury.
Sophomore Matt Scobie finished 33rd at 224, while junior Vincent Martino tied for 34th at 225.
USF's Ryan Fricker won medalist honors at 205 to finish two strokes ahead of SMU's Bryson Dechambeau. Teammate Trey Valentine and UCF's Linus Vaisanen tied for third at 209.
While the tournament was originally scheduled for 18 holes each day through Tuesday, coaches and American Athletic Conference administrators agreed Saturday morning to play 36 holes Sunday due to the threat of inclement weather later in the week.

Following the American Athletic Conference Championships, the Cougars learn their NCAA postseason fate during the NCAA Selection Show at 9 a.m. (CDT), May 4, on the Golf Channel.
That also will be the same day as the annual Dave Williams Pro-Am at The Woodlands Country Club. All proceeds from this annual fundraiser benefit Project 17 - the Houston Golf booster club - and the capital campaign for the Dave Williams Golf Academy at Golf Club of Houston.

Six 54-hole tournaments will be held at six NCAA Regional sites on May 14-16. The 2015 NCAA Regional sites are: UNC Finley Golf Course, hosted by North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C.; The Farms Golf Club, hosted by San Diego in San Diego.; The Rawls Course, hosted by Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas; Golf Mountain Golf Club, hosted by Washington in Bremerton, Wash.; The Course at Yale, hosted by Yale in New Haven, Conn.; and The Sagamore Club, hosted by Ball State in Noblesville, Ind.
The low five teams and low individual not on those teams will advance to the NCAA Championships, slated for May 29-June 3 at The Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla.
AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS HISTORY
This marked the second straight season in which the Cougars competed at the American Athletic Conference Championships. A year ago, Houston finished third at the event on the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort & Golf Club.
The Cougars boasted three of the top-20 leaders with Robledo leading the way at even-par 213 to tie for fourth. Curtis Reed finished eighth with a score of 215 with Wesley McClain finishing 18th at 220.
CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS HISTORY
The Cougars have enjoyed tremendous success during their conference championships history. Houston has posted 20 team titles with the most recent coming at the 2013 Conference USA Championships in Texarkana, Ark. It was the program's first conference title since 2001.
In addition to the team success, the Cougars can boast of 20 conference medalists during the program's history. Robledo was the most recent individual champion after posting a score of 8-under-par 208 at the 2013 Conference USA Championships. He became the first Cougar to win a conference individual title since Brad McIntosh in 2001.
