BRADENTON, Fla. - The University of Houston Men's Golf program stood in a tie for 20th after posting a team score of 301 during the First Round of the NCAA Championships at The Concession Golf Club on Friday morning.
Junior Blair Hamilton took advantage of a solid back nine to record a 73 in his NCAA Championships debut on the 7,483-yard, par-72 layout. After battling through three bogeys on his first nine holes, the Burlington, Ontario, Canada, native rallied with three birdies on the back nine, including consecutive efforts on Nos. 12 and 13, to tie for 35th and lead the Cougars.
Hamilton entered the NCAA Championships after sharing medalist honors at the NCAA Lubbock Regional on May 14-16. He became only the third player in school history to win an NCAA Regional title, joining Brett Callas (2003) and Dean Larsson.
Senior All-American Roman Robledo tied for 54th with a 76, while senior Kyle Pilgrim tied for 79th with a 76. Freshman Michael Perras stood in a tie for 108th with a 78, while junior Vincent Martino was tied for 133rd at 80.
No. 4 Illinois held the first-day lead with a score of 286 to stand two strokes ahead of No. 33 Georgia. No. 13 USC (289), No. 28 San Diego State (290), No. 9 LSU (292), No. 37 Florida (293), No. 12 Georgia Tech (293), No. 14 USF (294), No. 2 Texas (294) and No. 17 UCLA (294) rounded out the top-10 leaders.
Individually, Illinois' Thomas Detry and Claudio Correa of USF stood atop the leaderboard with 68s, while Duke's Jake Shuman and Anders Albertson tied for third with 69s with eight players tied for fifth at 70.
All 30 teams will complete 54 holes of stroke play, starting Friday and ending Sunday afternoon, on the 7,483-yard, par-72 course.
Following 54 holes, the top 15 teams along with the top nine individuals not on an advancing team will compete in one additional round of stroke play Monday to determine the top eight teams for match-play competition and the NCAA individual national champion.
The top eight teams after 72 holes will be placed into a match-play bracket with the winner emerging as the NCAA team national champion. Match-play teams will square off Tuesday morning with the winners advancing to the national semifinals later that afternoon.
The Championships Finals tee off early Wednesday afternoon with the NCAA team national championship on the line.

Robledo, Pilgrim and Martino are competing in the second NCAA Championships of their careers. They became the 62nd, 63rd and 64th players in school history to play in multiple NCAA Championships during their careers.
Perras and Hamilton are competing in their inaugural NCAA Championships this week.

A year ago, the Cougars finished 10th with a score of 848. James Ross tied for third with a score of 5-under-par 205, thanks to a Final-Round 66, while Robledo tied for 19th at 209. Both earned various All-America honors for their play.
