IOWA CITY, Iowa - The University of Houston diving squad began competition at the NCAA Zone D Championships on Monday, with four Cougars competing in the 3-meter springboard.
Despite quality performances all around, two Houston divers barely missed qualifying for the NCAA Championships in the event. Junior Danielle Shedd finished 11th, and redshirt freshman Micaela Bouter placed 12th. Divers needed to finish in the top 10 to book an automatic spot into the NCAA meet, which will be held March 19-21 in Greensboro, N.C.
Shedd ended the day with a score of 636.40, finishing 1.05 points outside of the all-important 10th spot. She scored a 63.00 in both the Back 2 1/2 Somersault Pike and the Reverse 2 1/2 Somersault Pike in finals but placed just outside of the automatic qualification positions.
Bouter scored a cumulative total of 631.80 and finished 5.65 points away from an automatic NCAA Championships bid. Her Reverse 2 1/2 Somersault Tuck and her Forward 2 1/2 Somersault 1 Twist Pike were each scored with a 63.00 in the finals.
Senior Natasha Burgess finished 16th in the event, with a score of 614.25. Her best dive, a 60.00, came in the Forward 2 1/2 Somersault 1 Twist Pike.
Burgess led the way in the preliminary round, finishing 10th with a score of 315.75. Her best dive, a Back 2 1/2 Somersault Pike, scored a 63.00. Shedd took 13th place, scoring 307.00, including an Inward 2 1/2 Somersault Tuck that was graded at 55.35.
