LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The University of Houston Softball split the day dropping a heartbreaker to UNLV, 8-7, after a late comeback and picked up a shutout win over Iowa State on day two of the UNLV Rebel Classic.
Houston's 5-0 shutout win over the Cyclones is the first shutout win of the season as the Cougars move to 12-13 on the season.
UNLV 8, Houston 7 - BOX SCORE
UNLV jumped on the board early with four runs in the first inning. Houston was held scoreless until the top of the third, when the Cougars put up three runs off three hits and an error.
Senior Kayla Holland led off with a single to right center followed by a Katie St. Pierre slapper to short, causing an error. A UNLV wild pitch advanced the runners to second and third with no outs. Freshman Kaylin Crumpton stepped up and knocked a two-run single to centerfield, scoring on the following sacrifice fly by Shelby Miller.
The Cougars were down 6-3 heading into the seventh inning when Holland led off with a base hit up the middle and St. Pierre followed with another chopper to third base, beating out the throw. With runners on first and second and one out, Selena Hernandez brought in two runs with a double to the left-center gap. Tiffani McKnight slapped one straight back to the pitcher, but the UNLV pitcher overthrew first base that sent McKnight to third and scored Hernandez to tie the game.
UNLV couldn't score in the bottom half of the inning, forcing play to go into the international tie-breaker rule.
Houston placed Davila on second and advanced her to third on a sac bunt by Courtney Klingler. A base hit by Shrum plated Davila to push the Cougars up 7-6. The Rebels responded and tied the game off a throwing error and a sac pop fly to Holland. Another error by the Houston defense moved the runner to third and a walk off single plated the final run of the game.
Shrum (4-6) took the loss for Houston only giving up one earned run, two walks while striking out five.
