LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The University of Houston Softball team put up 10 hits on No. 14/16 California, but that wasn't enough as the Cougars fell, 9-3, in the final game of the UNLV Rebel Classic Sunday morning.
With the loss, Houston falls to 12-14 on the season and 0-2 against the Golden Bears all-time. The Cougars finish the tournament (3-2) in third place behind UNLV and California.
Sophomore Shelby Miller had a stellar showing at the plate as she went 3-for-4 with four singles to the outfield.
After two shutout innings, the Cougars jumped out to a 2-0 lead after junior Katie St. Pierre achieved the base on a fielder's choice and freshman Kaylin Crumpton took a ball to the thigh. Runners on first and second, Hernandez singled to left field and advanced to second on a fielding error by Cal's Jasmin Mejia while plating St. Pierre. Miller followed with a base hit to the opposite side of the field, bringing in Crumpton.
Cal responded with a five-run bottom half including a two-run homer by Cheyenne Cordes. Danielle Henderson followed par with another shot over the right field fence to take the lead. The Golden Bears would score two more runs in the inning off a 2-RBI double.
In the top of the fourth, Houston added a run when Klingler led off with a base hit. Julana Shrum earned a second life after Cal's first baseman Kobie Pettis dropped a foul pop up, and made the Golden Bears pay as she singled to second base. With two outs, St. Pierre reached first on an error by the Cal catcher, scoring Alexis Dunn who entered the game to pinch run for Klingler at second.
Houston allowed Cal to score four more runs late in the fifth inning off three singles, a hit-by-pitch and a wild pitch by relief pitcher Miller.
Shrum (4-6) took the loss for the Cougars as she pitched 3.0 innings, allowed five runs, seven hits, three walks and struck out one. Relief pitcher Summer Groholski came in during the bottom of the sixth to close the game. She went 1.1 IP and didn't give up a hit or run.
