HOUSTON - The University of Houston diving team will compete at the 2015 NCAA Division I Zone D Championship, hosted by the University of Iowa from March 9-11. Competition on each of the three days begins at 11 am CT at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center in Iowa City, Iowa, and live scoring is available at DiveMeets.com.
Houston enters the Zone D competition after dominating the American Championships last month in Greensboro, N.C. Sophomore Taylor Olanski led the way and was named American Diver of the Year after being crowned champion in both the 3-meter and platform events.
Junior Danielle Shedd had a successful appearance at the Championship, winning the 1-meter and finishing second in the 3-meter. Senior Natasha Burgess recorded three top-five finishes, and redshirt freshman Micaela Bouter had a great showcase in her first appearance at the conference championship, finishing second in the 1-meter.
All four Houston divers were named to the All-Conference team, and Diving Coach Yulia Pakhalina was named American Athletic Conference Diving Coach of the Year for the second season in a row.
Olanski will compete in the 3-meter and platform events at the Zone D Championship, while Bouter, Burgess and Shedd will each take part in the 1-meter and 3-meter competitions.
The four Houston student-athletes are part of an 81-athlete group from schools across the Zone D region. Included in the field are divers from American rivals SMU and Tulane, host Iowa and in-state competitors Texas and Texas A&M, among others.
The 3-meter competition will be held on Monday, with the 1-meter on Tuesday and the platform on Wednesday. All three days will begin at 11 am CT.
The top eight finishers in the 1-meter will advance to the NCAA Championships. The top 10 will qualify from the 3-meter, and the top nine will advance in the platform. For live scoring and more information, visit DiveMeets.com.
Last year, Olanski placed second in the Zone D competition in platform diving to advance to the 2014 NCAA Championship, where the then-freshman finished 14th.
