Football Holds First Scrimmage of Spring Season

HOUSTON - Under beautiful weather conditions, the University of Houston Football program held the first scrimmage under head coach Tom Herman on Saturday afternoon inside TDECU Stadium with plenty of support from UH students.
In the inaugural Frontier Fiesta Houston Football Student Appreciation Practice, current UH students were invited to watch Saturday's scrimmage from the sidelines with several pulled from the crowd to take part in warm-up drills, punt returns and field goal attempts.
"I cannot put into words what our students mean to us," said Herman, who enters his first season with the Cougars this fall. "For us to be able to create the homefield advantage we want to have, we have to be able to walk the walk. It has to be about action with our students, and we accomplished that with this first step today. Our students were great today, and we will continue to build this event each year with them in mind."
In a close battle, the Houston defense outshined their offensive counterparts and claimed bragging rights with a 45-40 win. The Cougar defenders also walked back to the Athletics/Alumni Center a little lighter as their offensive teammates had to carry their helmets and shoulder pads back to the facility following the loss.
On the field, senior running back Kenneth Farrow led with 46 rushing yards on 12 carries and added three touchdowns runs of 7, 1 and 2 yards.
At quarterback, senior Adam Schulz led the Cougars with 94 yards on 13-of-22 passing and a 27-yard touchdown strike to junior Demarcus Ayers. However, junior Greg Ward Jr., threw for a game-high three touchdown passes on the way to 67 yards on 9-of-12 passing. Ward also connected with Ayers on a 10-yard touchdown pass and hit sophomore wide receiver Linell Bonner on a 5-yard strike and sophomore wideout Derek McLemore with a 6-yard score.
Ayers, who was the 2013 American Athletic Conference Special Teams Player of the Year as a freshman, grabbed five passes for 43 yards and a game-high two touchdowns. Bonner led the Cougars with 52 receiving yards on four catches.
Defensively, senior safety Earl Foster led all players with six tackles, while senior linebacker Elandon Roberts added five tackles and a sack. Senior cornerback Tyler White and senior linebacker Luke Stice totaled five tackles apiece, while junior linebacker Steven Taylor added five tackles and the game's only interception.
Following the workout, UH Student Government Association President Charles Haston and Chancellor/President Renu Khator addressed the team before the Cougars enjoyed a group photo with students on John O'Quinn Field and met other students.
