HOUSTON - The No. 39 University of Houston tennis team will play for a school record on Saturday when they host a pair of matches at Houston Country Club. Houston battles No. 29 Dartmouth at 11 am CT, and following that match the Coogs will face Tyler Junior College.
Live scoring for both matches is available at UHCougars.com/TennisScores .
Houston (15-4) enters Saturday on an 11-match winning streak, the second-longest unbeaten streak in Cougar program history. With two wins on Saturday, Houston would match their longest winning streak, a 13-match stretch from Feb. 10 - March 23, 1990.
Patrick Sullivan's team went 4-0 last week, with victories over Tulane, Cincinnati, East Carolina and No. 62 Marshall. The 5-2 triumph over the Thundering Herd on March 22 was the team's seventh victory of the season against a nationally-ranked opponent, increasing a school record.
Houston rose nine spots to No. 39 in Tuesday's Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll. Sophomore Despoina Vogasari is the nation's No. 42 singles player, and senior Elena Kordolaimi is listed at No. 118 nationally. The Cougars are the American Athletic Conference's top-ranked team, while Vogasari and Kordolaimi are the league's top two singles competitors.
Vogasari leads the Cougars with a 25-6 record, while Kordolaimi is 24-6. Junior Maria Cardenas has won three straight singles matches to boost her record to 15-11, while freshman Angela Lorenzo is on a four-match winning streak to improve to 14-2.
Kordolaimi enters Saturday's doubleheader with 43 dual match victories during her three seasons at Houston. With one more win, she will pass Joy Tacon (1982-84) for 10th place in UH history.
SCOUTING DARTMOUTH |
The Big Green is 13-1 after scoring a 5-2 victory over UC Irvine on Monday in their last match. Dartmouth faces Cal State Northridge on Wednesday evening before flying to Houston for their weekend tilt.
Coached by Bob Dallis, the Big Green started the season 11-0 to vault as high as No. 23 in the ITA national rankings. Included in the season-opening winning streak were three victories over ranked squads.
Sophomore Taylor Ng is ranked No. 103 in the nation and leads Dartmouth with a 28-6 record, including a 13-1 spring mark. A native of Haddonfield, N.J., Ng won four matches at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships in October. Later that month, she advanced to the semifinals of USTA/ITA Northeast Regional Championships.
Saturday will mark the second meeting between Dartmouth and Houston. The Coogs knocked off the Big Green on March 28, 2014 in Hanover, N.H., 4-3. Kordolaimi dropped Ng, 0-6, 6-3, 6-3, to clinch the match, while Cardenas, Tina Rupert and Charlotte Phillips also won singles matches. The Cougars lost the doubles point before rallying to win.
SCOUTING TYLER JUNIOR COLLEGE |
Tyler comes into Saturday's match with a 6-5 record. Their last completed contest came on March 20, a 9-0 loss to ASA, the top-ranked junior college team in the nation.
Dash Connell's team is ranked No. 2 in the NJCAA according to the ITA. Sophomore Joanna Savva, a Houston signee, is the ITA's top-ranked junior college player, while teammates Elizabeth Bagerbaseh, Paige Murdock, Adriana Garrett and Katie Delgado are also nationally-ranked, and Savva teams with Murdock to form the nation's top-rated junior college doubles team.
The Cougars are 4-0 all-time against Tyler. The last meeting came on March 8, 2014, a 5-0 Cougar sweep. Vogasari, Kordolaimi, Cardenas and Rocio Martin all won singles points a season ago.
