Cougars Compete in 1-Meter at Zone D Championships

IOWA CITY, Iowa - The University of Houston diving team continued their run at the NCAA Zone D Championships on Tuesday with the 1-meter springboard event. Junior Danielle Shedd led Houston with a ninth place finish, just one spot outside of qualification for the NCAA Championships.
Shedd ended the day with a final score of 595.95, just 3.05 points short of a spot in the NCAA meet. Her Forward 2 1/2 Somersault Pike was her top dive of the final round, at 53.30.
Redshirt freshman Micaela Bouter placed 11th to conclude her first trip to Zone Diving, with a final score of 576.15. Her best dive, a Forward 2 1/2 Somersault Pike, was scored at 58.50 to set the top mark among Cougars for the day.
Senior Natasha Burgess, the 2014 American Athletic Conference Diver of the Year, closed the meet with a 17th place finish. Her total score was 540.40, and her best dive, an Inward 1 1/2 Somersault Pike, was marked at 50.40.
All three Cougars advanced to the finals after strong preliminary sessions. Shedd placed second in prelims, at 314.70, with her Reverse 1 1/2 Somersault Pike earning a 57.60.
Burgess rallied late in the session to finish 14th and book a spot in the finals with a total score of 274.90. Her last dive, a Forward 1 1/2 Somersault 2 Twist Free, was graded at 50.70 to clinch a spot in the afternoon session.
Bouter also came on strong late in prelims after spending much of the session outside of the top 18. Her final score of 272.90 was good for 15th, and her Inward 1 1/2 Somersault Pike received a 49.20.
On Monday, each of the three Cougars competed in the 3-meter dive. Shedd finished 11th, Bouter 12th, and Burgess 16th.

The Zone D Championships conclude tomorrow with the platform competition. Sophomore Taylor Olanski, the 2015 American Athletic Conference Diver of the Year, will represent the Cougars beginning at 11 am CT. Live scoring is available at DiveMeets.com.
Olanski finished second at the Zone platform competition last season to advance to the NCAA Championships.
On Monday, Olanski finished 24th in the 3-meter dive.
