HOUSTON - The University of Houston women's tennis team is back in town to host a pair of matches this weekend at the John E. Hoff Courts. The Cougars face No. 57 Washington State on Friday at noon, and they end the week on Saturday at 2 pm against No. 42 Washington.
Admission is free for all home matches, and live scoring for both contests is available at UHCougars.com/TennisScores.
Houston (2-3) enters the week ranked No. 51 according to the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division I rankings. The Cougars played just once last week, a 5-2 loss at New Mexico on Jan. 29. Sophomore Despoina Vogasari and senior Elena Kordolaimi won singles matches against the Lobos, accounting for Houston's two points.
The Greek duo continues to set the tone for Houston. Vogasari is ranked No. 21 nationally, tops among players from Texas institutions, and she is 15-3 overall. The reigning American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year is 4-0 in the spring, and 5-2 this year against nationally-ranked opponents.
Kordolaimi is ranked No. 52 nationally and has won her last seven completed matches dating back to the fall season. The senior is 4-1 against nationally-ranked singles competitors and 12-4 overall in 2014-15.
Kordolaimi has also formed one half of Houston's top doubles tandem. She and teammate Rocio Martin lead the Cougars with three doubles victories in the spring.
Freshman Angela Lorenzo is Houston's third nationally-ranked singles player, checking in at No. 106. The rookie was undefeated in the fall season and enters the weekend sporting a 10-1 overall record.
Sophomore Tina Rupert made her spring debut in the New Mexico match and immediately earned a doubles victory. Her partnership with Maria Cardenas has won all four of their pairs competitions in 2014-15.
SCOUTING WASHINGTON STATE |
Washington State enters the weekend 6-0 in dual matches. WSU will face Prairie View A&M in Houston on Thursday prior to playing the Cougars on Friday.
Senior Elizaveta Luzina and junior Maria Biryukova each enter the week with 21 singles victories this season. Luzina is ranked No. 18 in the Northwest Region, and she teams with Liza Leenknecht to form the fifth-ranked doubles duo in the region, a pairing that is 6-0 in the spring. Teammates Donisha Bashota and Victoria Matejevic are ranked No. 10 in the Northwest.
Houston is 2-0 all-time against Washington State. UH earned a 5-4 win on March 16, 1993 and a 5-2 victory on Feb. 21, 2014. Vogasari defeated Luzina in last season's triumph, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, while Rupert, Cardenas and Charlotte Phillips also earned singles wins.
SCOUTING WASHINGTON |
Washington is 3-2 on the season. The Huskies are coming off of a 6-0 sweep of Winthrop on Jan. 25 in their last match. Junior Elianne Douglas-Miron is their lone ranked player, at No. 14 in the Northwest Region and No. 90 nationally.
The Cougars are 2-1 all-time against Washington. Houston won the first meeting, 9-0, on March 30, 1991, and the Huskies came back with a 5-1 victory on March 26, 1993.
Patrick Sullivan's team won a thriller last season, 4-3, on Feb. 23, 2014. Vogasari defeated Douglas-Miron on that day, while Rupert clinched the victory with a 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory over current Washington senior Riko Shimizu.
