GREENSBORO, N.C. - The University of Houston continued competition at the American Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships on Thursday with two individual top-10 finishes and a pair of personal records at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
After two days of competition, Houston is in fifth place with a score of 163. SMU leads the way in first place overall with a score of 270. UConn is in second with a score of 221, while East Carolina is in third at 219.5.
In the 500-yard freestyle, senior Mackenzie Alspaugh finished 10th in a time of 4:58.29, a personal and team season best. Teammate Rachel Hobbins swam the race in a time of 5:02.33 to grab 14th place.
"Tonight, we didn't have a lot of swims, but what we had were much better than this morning," said Houston interim head coach Keith Dawley. "I am especially proud of Mackenzie and Rachel, who came back from tough morning swims and found ways to get faster."
Junior Doroteja Bednjanec swam the 50-yard freestyle in 23.54, setting a personal best and netting the ninth-fastest time in the Houston record books. Bednjanec finished second in the consolation final, good for 10th overall.
"Dora was in a really tight race and was able to beat most of a very fast consolation final," said Dawley. "It was great to see her follow that up with a great leadoff relay leg."
The team of Bednjanec, Taylor Gregory, Caitlin Horner and Jasmine Williams finished sixth in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a swim of 1:39.59. SMU won the event.
"We have a lot of big swims ahead of us tomorrow morning," said Dawley. "If we can build off of the performances we had tonight, then we'll be in a good spot going into tomorrow's finals session."
