NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas - The University of Houston Women's Golf program tees off its spring season this weekend when it competes at the Delta Gamma Challenge, starting Sunday morning at Landa Park Golf Club.
Hosted by Texas State, the two-day, 54-hole event will be played on the 6,006-yard, par-71 layout and concludes on Sunday afternoon. The Cougars face Idaho, New Mexico State, Lamar, UALR, Cal State Fullerton, Sam Houston State, Houston Baptist, Missouri State, Ball State, UTEP, Stephen F. Austin, Youngstown State and host Texas State.
"I like where we are at and how everything has happened to this point, but practice and qualifying are much different than tournament golf," head coach Gerrod Chadwell said. "We are looking forward to seeing how the work in practice and qualifying translates into tournament play."

This will be the Cougars' first action since finishing second at the Jim West Challenge on Nov. 2-3 at Tapatio Springs Golf Resort. Ironically, that tournament also was hosted by Texas State.
Competing in its first year in team competition, the Cougars enjoyed four top-4 team finishes in five fall tournaments. A year ago, three student-athletes competed as individuals during the program's first season under Chadwell.
THE LINEUP
Chadwell and assistant coach Lucy Nunn will send eight student-athletes to the tournament. Junior Raegan Bremer, senior Courtney Ferguson, sophomore Emily Gilbreth and freshmen Megan Thothong and Yuka Kajiki will compete for the team lineup with freshmen Maddy Rayner, Tatiana Pineda and Courtney Tibiletti playing as individuals.
"We had competition for all eight spots, and that makes us sharp and keeps everyone working hard. We tell them every day that iron sharpens iron," Chadwell said. "If it's that competitive at home, I know that's going to translate on the road and hopefully we see those dividends quickly."
Sunday's play opens with an 8:30 a.m., shotgun start. Tibiletti will start her day in the first group off No. 18 while Pineda tees off the first group off No. 17 with Rayner opening her spring in the second group off that hole.
Kajijki and Thothong will start the First Round off No 3 with Gilbreth teeing off No. 2. Ferguson and Bremer begin the spring season off No. 1.
Sunday's Second round is scheduled to begin around 2 p.m., with student-athletes starting off their First-Round holes.
Bremer leads the team with a 74.13 scoring average and posted a pair of top-10 finishes in the fall season, including a sixth-place showing at the Old Waverly Bulldog Invitational on Oct. 20-22. The Anaheim, Calif., native became the first Cougar to compete at the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship over the summer and advanced to the Round of 64.
Ferguson is the Cougars' lone senior and ranks second with a 74.56 average. The Clear Brook, Texas, native was hampered by injury at the beginning of the fall but opened her season with back-to-back top-20 showings at the Old Waverly Bulldog Invitational and Alamo Invitational.
Gilbreth competed in all but one tournament during the fall season. During the fall finale at the Jim West Challenge, the Bellaire High product was steady through all three rounds and finished a career-best fourth with a score of 220.
Thothong (pronounce Toe-Tong) has made an immediate impact in her first collegiate season. The Dallas native competed in all five tournaments with a pair of top-10 finishes, including a seventh-place showing at the Jim West Challenge to help lead the Cougars to a second-place team finish.
Like Thothing, Kajiki is in her first season with the Cougars, but the Hiroshima, Japan, native enjoyed the team's best individual finish of the season to date with a third-place showing at the Mary Fossum Invitational on Sept. 13-14, 2014.
Rayner will compete in her fourth tournament of the season and enjoyed a 16th-place finish at the season-opening "Mo"Morial, while Pineda will take part in her second collegiate event. Tibiletti will see action in her third event of the year.
UP NEXT
Following the Delta Gamma Challenge, the Cougars return to action on March 9-10 when they compete at the North Florida Challenge at Jacksonville Golf and Country Club in Jacksonville, Fla. It will be the first of two tournaments in the month of March.
