PARK CITY, Utah â€" Behind an absolutely dominating first day, the University of Houston Men's Golf program compiled a 16-stroke lead following the first two rounds of the OGIO Utah Invitational at The Jeremy Golf and Country Club on Monday evening.
The Cougars held the First-Round lead after posting a team score of 273 and then added even more with a sparkling 17-under-par 267 total in the afternoon session for total of 540. In each round, four Cougars in the starting lineup posted sub-par scores with four in the 60s in the Second Round on the 7,075-yard, par-71 course.
Houston stood 16 strokes in front of Utah State through 36 holes and was 24 ahead of Little Rock. Host Utah (566), Weber State and Utah "B" rounded out the top-6 team leaders.
Individually, all five members of the Cougars' starting lineup were tied among the top-12 leaders. Junior Matt Scobie fired back-to-back 66s to hold the first-day lead at 10-under-ar 132., while senior All-American Blair Hamilton was tied for third at 134. Senior Vincent Martino stood in 10th at 140 with junior Emmett Oh and sophomore Michael Perras tied for 12th at 141.
"We played extremely well and posted some great scores," said Director of Golf Jonathan Dismuke, who is in his seventh year with the Cougars. "It was fun to watch."
Scobie was a birdie machine on Monday, sinking at least seven birdies in each round. Starting the day on No. 2, the Ajax, Ontario, Canada, native actually struggled to start. After making a birdie on No. 2, the bogeyed the next two holes before making four straight pars.
As he began at No. 10, the birdies started to fall. Scobie birdied five of the first seven holes on the back nine, including three straight on Nos. 12-14. After consecutive pars on Nos. 17 and 18, he capped his First Round with a birdie on No. 1.
Scobie's Second Round proved to be much the same as his First Round. He drained three birdies through his first eight holes and used the back nine to propel him up the leaderboard. As in the First Round, he birdied four of the first five holes and overcame bogeys on No 16 and No. 18 to cap his long day with another birdie on No. 1.
"Matt hung in his rounds and continued to make birdie after birdie after birdie," Dismuke said. "He did a great job on the par-5s."
Scobie enters the Final Round one stroke ahead of Weber State's Devon Purser and two in front of teammate Hamilton and Tanner Jenson of Utah State.
Starting on No. 1, Hamilton posted only one birdie and one bogey in his First Round before making three birdies through the first four holes of his back nine on the way to a 68. The Burlington, Ontario, Canada, was even more impressive in the Second Round, sinking six birdies â€" including four in a six-hole stretch on the back nine â€" with only one bogey on the way to a 66 of his own.
After opening with an even-par 71, Martino posted a 69 in the Second Round, which saw him with three birdies and only one bogey.
Oh overcame a 75 in the First Round to shoot a career-low 66 in the afternoon. The Calgary, Alberta, Canada, native played bogey-free golf in the Second Round and used the front nine to make his move. Oh sank four of his five birdies in the round on the first nine holes, including three of the first five.
He topped his previous low of 69, set during the First Round of the Bayou City Collegiate Championship on Feb. 21, 2014.
Perras recorded four birdies in his opening round on the way to a 68. Playing as individuals, redshirt freshman Logan Davis was tied for 30th at 145, while junior Matt Dunn was tied for 44th at 148.
Although the Cougars enjoy a sizable lead entering the Final Round, Dismuke said he was pleased with his team's mindset following the first day.
"We will talk about keeping our foot on the gas, and the thing I like about this team is they do that.," Dismuke said. "They feed off each other. They did a nice job f capitalizing on momentum. When they get things going right, it's a pretty special group."
