Houston Concludes Rice Invitational with 15 Top-Five Finishes

HOUSTON - The University of Houston Swimming and Diving team finished the Rice Invitational in third place after the team grabbed 15 top-five finishes Saturday afternoon. The diving team took home first place in each event, and the swimmers had impressive finishes from a multitude of underclassmen as well as the 200-yard freestyle and medley relay teams at the Rice Aquatics Center Competition Pool.
Houston finished the Rice Invitational in third place with a score of 743. Arkansas finished in first place overall with a score of 1,162. Rice followed in second with a score of 945, while the University of the Incarnate Word finished fourth, ending with 548 points.
In diving's 2015-16 individual season debut, the team grabbed first place in both the 1-meter and 3-meter events. Sophomore Micaela Bouter finished first after netting a score of 315.45 in her 1-meter dive. Teammate Danielle Shedd took fifth in the 1-meter with a score of 281.20.
Shedd nabbed the first place spot in the 3-meter dive with her score of 330.45. Right behind her was Bouter, who scored 322.90 to finish second and junior Taylor Olanski, the American Athletic Conference Diver of the Year, rounded out the top-five with her score of 285.10.
Continuing in her great individual collegiate racing debut, freshman Delia Weber grabbed a third place finish in the 1,650-yard freestyle in a time of 17:14.62. Fellow freshman Hannah Herbst placed fourth, swimming the race in 17:40.69.
In the 100-yard butterfly, sophomore Sharo Rodriguez took third place with a time of 57.99. Rodriguez also finished fourth with a time of 2:05.44 in the 200-yard butterfly.
A host of Houston underclassmen also left their mark on the Rice Invitational in individual events. Sophomore Ashley Grijalva finished fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:06.67. In the 100-yard breaststroke, freshman Eleanna Koutsouveli nabbed a fifth place finish with a time of 58.71. Last but not least, sophomore Emma Moore finished fifth overall with a time of 53.54 in the 100-yard freestyle.
Houston's relay teams had three top-five finishes. In the first event of the day, the 200-yard medley relay, the Cougars placed third. Koutsouveli, Grijalva, Rodriguez and Doroteja Bednjanec finished the race with a swim of 1:46.99.
In the 200-yard freestyle relay, the team of Bednjanec, Caitlin Horner, Moore and Julie Gibson finished third overall with at time of 1:38.61, a team season best.
In the 400-yard freestyle relay, Houston finished fifth overall. The team of Bednjanec, Horner, Moore and Rodriguez finished with a time of 3:38.48.

UP NEXT
The Cougars will host a homestand against SMU and North Texas in two dual meets Oct. 30 and 31 in the Campus Wellness and Recreation Center Natatorium. Action begins Friday at 6 p.m. against the Mustangs and Saturday at 11 a.m. against the Mean Green.
COUGARS TO HOST AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP
Houston will host the American Athletic Conference Championships for the first time as the best swimmers and divers in the league visit the CRWC from Feb. 17-20, 2016. Following the conference meet, the Cougars will look to close the season at the NCAA Championships, to be held March 17-19, 2016 in Atlanta.
