Houston enters the spring season listed as No. 37 in the ITA Division I rankings. The Cougars went 21-6 last season and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the third time in school history. Head Coach Patrick Sullivan was named American Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, while Despoina Vogasari, Elena Kordolaimi and Tina Rupert earned first team all-conference laurels.
Led by Vogasari, the Cougars are riding the momentum of an outstanding fall season. The sophomore from Athens, Greece went 11-3 in the fall, knocked off four nationally-ranked opponents and won Houston's first ever USTA/ITA Texas Regional singles title. Vogasari enters the spring ranked No. 21 individually in Division I tennis.
Kordolaimi is ranked 52nd in the nation after advancing to the semifinals of the Texas Regional. The senior also won her flight at the Jason's Deli Collegiate Invitational, part of an 8-4 fall campaign.
Vogasari enters the spring as the top-ranked player in the Texas region, and Kordolaimi is ranked No. 7.
Freshman Angela Lorenzo comes into the spring season ranked No. 108 after winning all nine of her fall season matches. The rookie from Medina Del Campo, Spain won her flights at the Solinco Houston Open, the Rice Invite and the Jason's Deli Collegiate Invitational.
The depth of the Cougar roster was on display during the fall season. Senior Charlotte Phillips, juniors Rocio Martin and Maria Cardenas and sophomore Rupert also achieved flight victories during fall tournaments.
UTSA went 11-11 last season, with a 0-3 record against ranked opponents. Junior Jacobea Junger is the team's top returner after winning 24 total matches during the 2014 spring season.
The Cougars are 20-1 all-time against UTSA. Houston swept the Roadrunners last season, 5-0, on Jan. 24, 2014. Vogasari, Phillips, Rupert and Cardenas each won singles matches in the rout.
BYU is ranked No. 61 entering the spring season and posted a 12-8 dual record last season. The Cougars are led by sophomore Toby Miclat, who won 23 singles matches last season, while fellow sophomore Savannah Ware is coming off of a 20-win season in 2014. The Cougars face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday before their match with Houston.
Brigham Young holds a 9-1 edge over Houston in ten prior meetings, though the teams have not faced off since an 8-1 BYU victory on March 1, 1996 in Provo, Utah.
