STORRS, Conn. - Houston Softball rolled to a pair of run-rule victories over UConn defeating the Huskies 12-2 and 16-2 and improved to 22-10 on the year and 8-0 in American Athletic Conference play. Houston (22-10 | 8-0) and UConn (7-24 | 2-5) wrap up the series on Sunday at 11 a.m.
The 8-0 start to conference play is the second-best in program history with the 2008 squad winning its first ten league games and extends the Cougars current winning streak to 10 games.
Houston's Haley Outon batted a perfect 5-for-5 with two home runs and eight RBI on the day to establish the program's career RBI record of 179.
HOUSTON 12, UCONN 2 (5) - BOX SCORE
The first four batters Houston sent to the plate all scored as the Cougars cruised to a 12-2 victory over UConn in the opening game of Saturday's doubleheader.
Selena Hernandez started the game with a single and moved ahead to second on Kendra Cullum's 78th career hit by a pitch. Back-to-back singles by Tiffani McKnight and Haley Outon the pair and put Houston ahead early. Jaime Edwards drove Outon home and became the fifth Cougar to reach base to start the game with a single up the middle to cap the scoring at 4-0 in the opening frame.
The four runs in the first was more than enough for sophomore Julana Shrum who picked up her eighth win of the season. The Porum, Okla., native threw the first four innings allowing no earned runs and two unearned before turning the ball over to Summer Groholski to finish the contest.
The Cougars got back to their scoring ways in the last two innings posting eight runs in the top of the fourth and fifth.
Hernandez (2-for-3, 3 R, 4 RBI) drew a bases-loaded walk in the fourth to score a run before Cullum (1-for-3, 2 R, 2 RBI) drove in two more with a single and advanced to second on the throw home. Haley Outon delivered an RBI on a sac fly that allowed both runners to advance. Edwards (2-for-3, 2 RBI) came up with another RBI single to score Cullum and put Houston ahead 9-2.
Hernandez hit a three-run home run to left field in the fifth inning for her fifth homer of the year and give the Cougars their final tally.
HOUSTON 16, UCONN 2 (5) - BOX SCORE
Haley Outon hit two home runs and drove in six runs to set the program's career RBI record with her total of 179 (Kristen Glowacz, 175) as Houston posted a 16-2 (5) win over UConn to complete the sweep.
It was the second time in her career she has hit multiple home runs in the same game and the second time this season as sister Diedre accomplished the same feat last weekend.
UH scored in every inning except the fifth to post the team's seventh run-rule win of the season. The scoring started in the first inning with Selena Herndnaez leading off the game with a double. Outon's first home run of the day made it a 2-0 game and then the offense really got rolling putting up 12 runs over the next two frames and batting around the order in both innings.
The second inning started similar to the first with a double by Kayla Holland leading things off. A series of fielders' choice and walks led to the first three runs crossing home before Haley Outon cleared the bases with a two-RBI single to make it 7-0. The two-RBI single was the hit that tied and then broke the career RBI record for Outon.
Houston doubled the score to make it 14-0 during their next turn at bat. After a leadoff out, the next seven batters in the UH lineup reached base and scored highlighted by Haley's three-run homer.
Pinch hitter Sydney Gerbracht delivered a two-run blast in the fourth to cap the scoring and give Houston the 16-2 decision.
Diedre Outon (10-5) picked up the win throwing three innings. Junior Summer Groholski threw two scoreless innings in her relief appearance.
