STORRS, Conn. - Houston Softball completed the sweep over Connecticut posting an 8-4 win on Sunday at Burrill Family Field. The Cougars improved to 23-10 on the year and remain a perfect 9-0 in American Athletic Conference action amidst an 11-game winning streak.
For the first time in the series, Houston found themselves behind after UConn (7-25 | 2-6) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning coming off a two-run homer from Audrey Grinnell. The lead didn't last long as the Cougars came back in the top of the second to regain the lead with a four-run rally.
Haley Outon worked a walk and advanced to second on a fielder's choice, and then joined forces with Kayla Holland to execute a double-steal moving both runners into scoring position. The move paid off when junior Jaime Edwards hit an RBI single and then proved to be superfluous freshman Jordan Rains' came down with her first career home run.
The three-run blast from Rains pushed Houston back into the lead with a 4-2 score and UH added an insurance run in both the next two innings push the lead to 6-2.
Kayla Holland hit Houston's second triple of the season and the second of her career to score Kendra Cullum in the third inning, who reached on a walk. Jordan Rains was trying for another triple in the fourth but was out on the throw after driving in freshman classmate and pinch runner Hayley Chamberlain.
Houston added their seventh and eight runs of the ball game from the bat of Selena Hernandez. The shortstop hit a ball that stopped short of going for a home run and settled for a double driving in Katie St. Pierre and Edwards.
Julana Shrum started inside the circle for the Cougars and lasted three innings throwing three strike outs before Houston turned to Diedre Outon as the senior picked up her second win the series. Outon improved to 11-5 before surrendering the ball to Summer Groholski who pitched the final inning for UH.
