HOUSTON - Houston Softball came through a pair of close games on Saturday with a split decision at the second day of the Houston Hilton Plaza Invite. Against Columbia, Houston posted a 5-4 walkoff win before falling 3-1 to North Dakota State.
"North Dakota is a very good ball club and they played better softball than us today," said head coach Kyla Holas. "We need to make sure we're making adjustments and staying focused. You're not going to come out every day and score 15, 17 runs. We need to be able to win without that type of offense. What we can do tomorrow is bring all parts of our game instead of just one."
Errors benefitted and doomed Houston's efforts as the first win came on an errant throw against Columbia. Houston committed three errors to the Bison with helping score three unearned runs.
HOUSTON 5, COLUMBIA 4
A furious four-run seventh-inning fueled Houston's comeback win over Columbia in the first game on Saturday. The Cougar bats came alive in the inning scoring all four runs with zero outs on the scoreboard before a Columbia (0-4) throwing error allowed Houston to the walkoff win.
Leading off the seventh was shortstop Selena Hernandez who collected her second hit of the game for the seventh time this season. No. 3 batter Kayla Holland hit a double to put herself and Hernandez into scoring position for Haley Outon. Outon's single scored both teammates and cut the disadvantage to 4-3. Junior Jaime Edwards worked a walk before pitch runner Alexis Dunn took her spot at first.
Senior Kendra Cullum put a grounder into play down to third base with a throwing error allowed the bases to clear and the Cougars to complete the comeback.
Columbia started the first inning with two home runs to put the home squad in an early 3-0 defect. Houston had its chances early on to cut into the lead but struggled to string together hits with seven left on base in the first four innings.
The first run of the game for UH came in the second inning as Sydney Gerbracht singled to right center. Hernandez (2-for-4, 1 R, 1 RBI) doubled in Gerbracht on her seventh double of the season.
Junior Summer Groholski tied a career high with seven strikeouts in her fourth start of the season before turning the ball to sophomore Julana Shrum who earned the win for UH. Shrum threw three innings of scoreless relief work and held Columbia scoreless. Shrum improved to 2-1 on the season.
NORTH DAKOTA STATE 3, HOUSTON 1
A pair of Houston miscues in the fifth inning helped North Dakota State (7-6) to a three-run rally and the win over Houston in Saturday's nightcap.
Diedre Outon threw six innings of work striking out five and tried helping her own cause at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance. She also struck out the side during the fateful fifth inning.
Houston held a brief 1-0 lead when Sydney Gerbracht scored on a fielder's choice. Gerbracht singled to start the fifth and moved around the bases on a bunt single by Katie St. Pierre and a sacrifice bunt by Selena Hernandez. Haley Outon put the ball into play for Gerbracht to score from third.
The next inning looked promising as Diedre Outon started the frame with a double and Kendra Cullum was hit by a pitch for the fourth time this year but UH was retired in order over the next three batters leaving two runners in scoring position. Houston stranded 10 runners on base in the game.
