HOUSTON - The University of Houston Swimming and Diving program heads to the inaugural American Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships hosted at the University of Louisville from Feb. 19-22.
The Cougars will compete against five other women's squads (Cincinnati, Connecticut, Louisville, Rutgers, SMU) during the four-day meet. Swimming preliminaries will be held each day in the morning starting at 10 a.m. The finals will begin each evening at 6 p.m. Diving preliminaries are at noon every day, with finals during the evening sessions.
The Cougars sported a 5-5 dual meet record under first year head coach Rich Murphy. Houston faced three teams within the league this year going 1-2 against Cincinnati, Louisville and picking up a win against SMU. The Cougars' 158-141 dual-meet victory over SMU marked the program's first win against their Dallas rivals since 1986.
The UH divers will look to uphold their strong tradition of scoring points at the conference championships as all three divers (Natasha Burgess, Taylor Olanski and Danielle Shedd) compete across all three boards.
In the swim races, Houston will look to their seniors to lead the way to points in the pool. Heather Winn heads into the meet seeded No. 6 in the 500 free and No. 8 in the 1,000 free. Fellow upperclassmen Laykin Lowry holds the No. 4 seed in the 200 fly and ranks No. 7 in the 400 IM.
Houston finished second last year at the 2013 Conference USA Championships, tying a program-best finish for the event.
