HOUSTON - The Athletics/Alumni Center was filled Saturday afternoon as the University of Houston volleyball program hosted the second annual Red and White Scrimmage and kids clinic.
There were over 200 boys and girls participating in the clinic prior to the game. They learned hitting and passing drills from the Cougars.
"The team really enjoyed working with the campers today," head coach Kaddie Platt said. "Its always a good way to give back to the community and show fans our appreciation."
For the scrimmage, players were distributed by position on the two teams. Members of the red team were Kadi Kullerkann, Marisa Guzman, Sarita Mikals, Cortney Warren, Emily Howard, Hunter Wise, Olivia O'Dell, Destiny Patterson and libero Natalie Keck.
The white team included Stephanie Daxboeck, Courtney Smith, Avalon Frantz, Taylor Whileyman, Kaiti Waters, Maddy Clarke and Meredith Ware, serving as libero.
The red team took the win in two sets (25-20, 25-14). They showed great effort on the offensive side as they recorded 29 kills with a .240 hitting average to the white team's 17 kills (.079). Freshman Mikals led the team with 8 kills.
"The Red and White match is a great way to showcase the 2013 team," Platt said. "We saw some great things from the girls and some things we need to work through. [Next week] we'll continue to work on team systems and getting prepared for traveling."
Both teams were defensively strong. The two liberos, Keck (12) and Ware (11), led each of the teams in digs. The red squad, however, was able to gain control of the ball better, siding out 58 percent of the time.
