HOUSTON---It was a tale of two halves Tuesday afternoon at Hofheinz Pavilion, as Houston held a 31-30 lead at halftime, but USF was able to outscore the Cougars, 47-23 in the second half to earn the 77-54 victory.
Sophomore guard Alecia Smith once again had herself a great performance, as she put in a season-high tying 15 points for a second consecutive game to lead the Cougars, while also connecting on four three-pointers on the day. Senior guard Demetria Foreman also scored in double-figures, as she poured in 12 points and collected two steals.
Senior forward Te'onna Campbell also managed to chip in with six points and a season-high tying five steals in the loss.
Inga Orekhova led all scorers with 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting from three-point land, while Alisa Jenkins posted a double-double, scoring 15 points and grabbing a game-high 13 rebounds.
Ariadna Pujol poured in 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting to round out the top performers for the Bulls (6-7, 1-1 The American).
For the second consecutive game Houston (4-9, 0-2 The American), put together an impressive first half comeback, after it fell behind 23-12 with 9:15 left to play in the half.
The Cougars would then proceed to go on an 8-0 run to make it just a 23-20 deficit with 6:19 left to play in the period, after Smith splashed home one of her four treys in the contest.
And the run wouldn't stop there, as Houston went on to outscore the Bulls 11-7 the rest of the half to actually take a 31-10 advantage into the halftime intermission, after Jessieka Palmer nailed mid-range jumper in the closing seconds.
The Houston bench outscored the USF reserves 15-8 in the first half, while it was also able to score eight points off of 12 forced turnovers.
Unfortunately, the Cougars never were able to get into an offensive rhythm in the second half, while the Bulls conversely caught fire, going 16-of-26 from the field for 61.5 percent.
Houston will try and get things back on track when it heads to New Jersey to take on Rutgers, Saturday at 11:00 a.m. CT.
