HOUSTON - The University of Houston swim team heads across town for the Rice Invitational on Oct. 25-26. Friday's start time is set for 4 p.m. with a double-session on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.
The Cougars will race against the home Owls alongside Incarnate Word in the two-day long, 18-swim event at the Rice Aquatics Center Competition pool. For first year head swimming coach Rich Murphy, the weekend offers him the chance to see his student-athletes race as individuals for the first time.
"This meet fits really well into our schedule and the invitational style format gives our young women an opportunity to compete in a number of events that could preview what they will swim at the Phill Hansel invitational as well as the American Athletic Conference Championships in February," said Murphy.
"The 3 session format in a little more than 24 hours compresses the recovery from session-to-session that is typical and provides its own challenge and opportunity. Anytime we can get this quantity of quality racing opportunities in a short amount of time, we are eager to pursue it."
Houston began their 2013-14 season with the North Texas Relays on Oct. 4 followed by three weeks of practice. The Cougars finished fourth at the relay event and are looking forward to some individual racing and competing during their only outdoor race of the season.
"The women on the team have done a great job investing in each practice and are pursuing improvement on a day-to-day basis that our coaching and support staff really appreciate."
The meet will be championship scored for the top 12 eligible individual times and the top 6 eligible relays. Each team will have 4 scoring individuals and 2 relays.
