HOUSTON--The University of Houston baseball team will play its first road game away from Houston on Tuesday when it travels to UL-Lafayette for a 6 p.m. contest with the Ragin' Cajuns in non-conference action.
The Cougars are eager to take their first road trip as they wrapped up the Houston College Classic with an impressive showing, upsetting No. 4 Arkansas and earning a convincing victory over Tennessee behind the arm of senior righty Jared Ray, who was named C-USA Pitcher of the Week for that performance.
Houston dropped the tournament finale to No. 24 Texas Tech, but saw positives in every game played over the weekend outing.
A LOOK BACK AT THE HOUSTON COLLEGE CLASSIC
The Cougars are led offensively by junior Chase Jensen, who upped his average over 100 points and now paces the team with a .361 clip and nine RBI. Senior Jake Runte follows with a .350 average and team-high 14 hits, four doubles, and 10 walks, while junior Jacob Lueneburg is hitting .295. As a team, Houston is hitting .278 and has recorded 48 walks, 12 hit-by-pitches for a .378 on-base percentage.
ON THE BUMP
Houston will start junior RHP Austin Pruitt on Tuesday against UL-Lafayette. Pruitt has made one career start as a Cougar vs. No. 5 Rice where he tossed 6.0 innings, while recording seven strikeouts. He enters Tuesday's game with a 1.69 ERA, an 0-1 record in three appearances and one start. In 10.2 innings pitched, Pruitt has fanned nine hitters.
UL-Lafayette will start RHP Kendall Mayer vs. the Cougars. Mayer holds a 6.00 ERA in two appearances in relief. He was tossed 3.0 innings, allowed two runs on four hits and one walk with one strikeout.
A LOOK AT UL-LAFAYETTE
The Ragin' Cajuns hold the exact same record as Houston at 6-5. They are coming off a 1-2 record last weekend at the UTSA Classic, beating Kansas for the only win. Louisiana is led offensively by Ryan Leonards' .415 average, 11 runs scored, 17 hits, four doubles and two triples.
HOUSTON vs. UL-LAFAYETTE HISTORY
Houston and UL-Lafayette will meet for the 49th time in school history on Tuesday. The Cougars own the all-time series at 36-11-1 dating back to 1948. Houston has won the last 8-of-9 and more specifically, in the last meeting--a 6-4 Houston victory on March 24, 2009. Senior Mo Wiley earned the win as the Houston starter in that game.
