BIRMINGHAM, AL. - The University of Houston softball team fell 3-2 to the UAB Blazers in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon. The Cougars turned three double plays in the game but the bats were held in check and saw their seven game Conference USA winning streak come to an end.
The three double plays tied a season high but Houston was unable to make the comeback despite playing nearly mistake-free defense and fell to 18-15 on the season and 7-3 in league play. Two of the double plays involved runners trying for home, saving Houston at least one run.
The Blazers (20-11, 7-0) took the initial 2-0 lead in the second inning off a two-run homer.
Haley Outon, who went 2-for-3 in the game, answered with her own long ball in fourth inning to cut the lead to one. It was Outon's team-leading 10th home run of the year, putting her in third place in the league totals.
In the bottom half of the inning, Kendra Cullum started the second double play of the game for Houston as she tossed the ball to Jennifer Klinkert at second to get the force out, before Klinkert tried to get the batter at first. The runner was safe at first but freshman Jaime Edwards alertly fired the ball to Haley Outon at home and she blocked the plate to get the third out of the inning.
Anderson laid down a bunt to reach first in the sixth inning, and moved around to second on Melissa Gregson's single the next pitch. Klinkert hit a bloop single into left field to score Anderson from second, cutting the lead again to one but Houston was unable to muster the tying run in the seventh inning.
Bailey Watts (9-6) took the loss, throwing four strikeouts and allowing six hits and two walks.
