HOUSTON - The Cougars erupted for five runs in the sixth inning to come from behind and post a 5-2 victory over UTEP. Houston hit five extra base and Haley Outon led the charge with her second game in a row hitting a three-run homer.
Outon's home run was the seventh of the year, good for the team lead.
Ashleigh Jones started the sixth-inning rally as the junior raced to beat out an infield single down the first base line. Holly Anderson followed that up by hitting her second double of the game to score Jones from first and put Houston on the board.
Melissa Gregson reached base by taking a pitch on the shoulder before setting the table for Outon. Outon pulled the ball over the left field fence to give the Cougars their first lead of the game with a 4-2 score.
Houston added an insurance run later in the inning as redshirt freshman Sydney Gerbracht connected on a single to score Jennifer Klinkert who reached base on a double, Houston's fourth of the inning.
Bailey Watts started in the circle for the Cougars and won her third straight contest to improve to 6-4 on the year. Watts struck out five of the first nine batters and allowed only four hits. The West Columbia, Texas native had a no-hit bid upset in the fifth inning as UTEP connected on three straight two-out singles to score their first run.
Facing a UTEP line up that features the top two home run hitters in the conference, Watts only allowed singles and held the potent lineup in check.
With the win, Houston evened out their overall and C-USA record at 13-13 (2-2). UTEP fell to 12-18 and 2-2 in conference.
