HOUSTON - The University of Houston softball team scored eight runs in the sixth inning to claim a 13-4 victory and complete the weekend sweep over UTEP. Ashleigh Jones delivered the run-ruling hit when the junior launched a triple to right field and drove in two runs to cap the Cougars big inning.
Jones was the only Cougar batter that didn't score in the inning but did provide two RBIs with her triple as the junior led off the inning with an out. The next eight Houston batters after the junior would go on to reach base and score. Holly Anderson started the scoring spree with her seventh home run of the year, a solo shot to left field. After Melissa Gregson's double, Houston would draw three walks hit two singles and be hit by a pitch to do the damage.
The eight-run inning is tied for the second-most this season for the team.
The Cougars held a 3-0 initial lead after Melissa Gregson a two-run homer to score Jones in the first inning. It was the second straight game for Gregson to go deep as she now has three homers on the year with all of them coming during league play. Houston would leave two runners on base to end the inning as Jennifer Klinkert was tagged out at home preventing a potentially big inning.
The Cougars are now 5-0 when Jones scores in her first at bat of the game.
With the win, Houston improved to 15-13 on the season and 4-2 in Conference USA.
Facing a Miner offense that led C-USA in on base percentage, slugging and runs, the Houston pitchers limited UTEP's run production all weekend long. Carmilla Carrera, the NCAA leader in home runs, hit two two-run home runs to score all the Miners runs on the day.
Besides Carrera's hits, only one runner touched second base as Bailey Watts (7-4) held the rest of the UTEP offense to only four hits on five strikeouts for her seventh win of the year. The sophomore went 2-0 over the weekend.
Carrera's first home run of the game tightened the score 3-2 in the third inning but Houston responded in the bottom half of the frame with Haley Outon's sacrifice fly to score Anderson who reached base on an error.
The Cougars outscored UTEP 28-6 the weekend to mark eight-straight wins over the to go along with five run-rule victories in the last six games.
