PALM DESERT, Calif. - For the second time this week, the University of Houston golf team tees it up when it opens play at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate.
The tournament opens with the first 36 holes beginning with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. (CST), Saturday. The final 18 holes begin with a 9:30 a.m. (CST) shotgun start Sunday on the 7,305-yard, par-72 course at the Classic Club.
The Cougars are part of a 24-team field that includes host Wyoming, Arizona, Auburn, Baylor, Cal Poly, Colorado, Denver, Hawai'i, Idaho, Iowa State, Kent State, Nebraska, Saint Mary's, San Francisco, Santa Clara, SMU, Southern Utah, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, UC Riverside, UNLV, UT Arlington and UTEP.
Houston comes into this weekend's event on the heels of a second-place finish at the Rice Intercollegiate at Houston's Westwood Country Club on Tuesday. Freshman Roman Robledo finished third, while sophomore Jesse Droemer tied for fourth to help lead the Cougars to their best finish of the young spring season and their second-best finish in 2011-12.
With his performance earlier this week, Robledo regained the team lead with a 72.78 scoring average. The Harlingen, Texas, native also leads the Cougars with eight rounds of par or better, including four rounds in the 60s. He joins with teammate Curtis Reed as the only Cougars to compete in all six team tournaments to date.
Droemer moved into second place on the team with a 73.40 average and five rounds of par or better and posted his second top-five finish this season. The Sealy, Texas, native finished third at the Houston Baptist Husky Invitational on Oct. 24-25.
Reed, freshman Kyle Pilgrim and junior James Ross also are scheduled to compete in the Cougars' starting lineup this weekend.
Pilgrim will be competing in the second straight tournament of his collegiate career, while Ross became only the fourth place in school history to fire a 64, accomplishing that feat in the first round of the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate in the fall finale on Oct. 31-Nov. 1.
Sophomore Wesley McClain also may compete as an individual at this weekend's event, but that has not yet been confirmed with tournament organizers.
