The Cougars, who entered the final round as the team leader by three strokes, struggled at times under windy and rainy conditions during the final 18 holes on the par-70, 7,023-yard Warren Course. At one point late on the back nine, the Cougars found themselves down by as many as four strokes to St. Mary's (Calif.).
"James' birdie on No. 16 was a big one. That was a tricky hole," said head coach Jonathan Dismuke, who is in his third season with the Cougars. "He finished the round really strong. Yesterday, he didn't have a good finish to his second round and was determined to finish the final round off. His play on 17 and 18 were critical. We made up a lot of shots on those last three holes."
However, Ross birdied the par-4 16th hole and made par on each of the final two holes to preserve the tie for the Cougars.
With his birdie, Ross finished the day with a team-low 69 and finished second on the individual leaderboard with a 54-hole score of 211. The Edinburgh, Scotland, native finished only one stroke behind UT Arlington's Paul McConnell, who finished at even-par 210.
"James had a great event and is a solid player," Dismuke said. "He has more experience in these conditions than anyone we have."
Houston tied with St. Mary's (Calif.) for the team title with a score of 870. Minnesota and UT Arlington each tied for third at 873, while No. 48 Notre Dame (880), No. 49 Missouri (883), Lamar (887), Eastern Michigan (887), Villanova (889) and San Francisco (893) rounded out the top-10 team leaders.
Freshman Roman Robledo moved into a tie for 11th at 218 after posting an even-par final round that saw him birdie three of his first five holes.
"We obviously did some good things to get a share of the title. Roman had a great round and kept us in it," Dismuke said. "We weathered the storm enough to give ourselves a tie. We will learn from our mistakes down the stretch and be better next time."
Other Cougars in action were sophomore Bryn Flanagan (t-28th, 223); sophomore Wesley McClain (225, t-36th) and sophomore Curtis Reed (226, t-39th).
