Lexington, Ky. - The University of Houston volleyball team closed out play at the UK Invitational with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-20) sweep of Loyola Marymount Saturday afternoon.
Houston put together a balanced attack with five Cougars recording at least six kills. Senior Lucy Charuk led the way with 10 kills and juniors Katie Norris and Stephanie Nwachukwu each had eight.
Freshman Caitlin Ogletree posted a game-high 34 assists, while freshman Natalie Keck led the Cougars with 14 digs.
"We came ready to play tonight," head coach Molly Alvey said. "We hit our serving targets really well and it's tough in the third match in two days to come out and perform. We also had the morning off and we did a good job of staying mentally prepared. There are always things that can be cleaned up and we will continue to work on those."
For their performances in the tournament, Charuk and junior Chandace Tryon were named to the UK Invitational All-Tournament Team.
Houston opened the match by taking a 3-0 lead over the Lions. LMU answered the Cougars lead, playing them to a 12-12 tie. But the lead was short-lived as Houston scored the next two points to regain a 14-12 advantage. After giving up most of its lead, Houston called a timeout on top 17-16. Out of the break, the Cougars pushed their lead 23-17, highlighted by kills from Norris and Charuk. Senior Ingrida Zauere closed out the set with her fourth kill to give UH a 25-20 win.
After falling behind early in the second set, Houston played to an 8-8 tie and took the lead on the next play. The Lions wouldn't give the Cougars the lead for long, taking a 16-15 advantage and forcing the Cougars to call a timeout. LMU scored the first two points out of the break, but the Cougars answered with the next three points to knot the set 18-18. UH took the lead for good on a kill by Tryon before winning the set 25-23.
Charuk led the Cougars through the first two sets with seven kills, while Tryon tallied five kills.
UH scored the first two points of the third set and never lost the lead. The Lions were able to tie the score at 3-3 and 5-5 but the Cougars would build a 15-11 lead during the early points of the set. LMU would call its second timeout in an attempt to regroup. It would look as though they would do so, taking two points out of the break, but the Cougars would answer and extend their lead, 21-13. LMU put together a late rally, pulling within three but a service error by the Lions and a kill by Nwachukwu sealed the 25-20 UH win.
