The University of Houston football team spent 90 minutes scrimmaging Saturday afternoon at Carl Lewis Field, with starting spots and playing time up for grabs. With the season opener two weeks away, the coaches looked for play-makers who will fill the gaps in the depth chart and travel roster.
FOUR FRESHMEN STAND OUT: Sumlin, in speaking to the media after the scrimmage, pointed out four freshmen who will play in week one -- defensive lineman Joey Mbu, linebacker Derrick Mathews, running back Daniel Spencer and receiver Mark Roberts. Sumlin feels this will be the fewest freshmen needed since he arrived at Houston, citing greater depth by upperclassmen.
HOUSTON RECEIVING VOTES: The Associated Press preseason poll was released this morning and Houston received 13 votes, good enough for No. 36 overall and the second-highest rated in Conference USA. The USA Today/Coaches poll, which came out two weeks ago, thought similarly of the Cougars with 13 votes and a No. 37 ranking.
