HOUSTON--- The University of Houston soccer team battled back from an 0-2 deficit against Texas Christian in a preseason scrimmage at Robertson Stadium, Saturday afternoon.
The Cougars got off to a slow start, allowing two early goals to TCU's Kristen Halverson in less than two minutes of play. After the early miscues, Houston held TCU scoreless for the final 86 minutes.
Towards the end of the first half the Cougars started to gel and Kelsey Zamora scored the team's first goal in the 28th minute. On a nice pass from freshman Kayla Walker, Zamora blasted the ball from just outside the box causing it to ricochet off the right side of the goal and narrowly roll in, on the opposite side of the goal for a Cougars score.
"In the first half we were unorganized and all over the place and couldn't really get it together," said UH head soccer coach Susan Bush on the first half performance. "I feel that bringing in new faces after halftime provided a spark in the second half"
In the second half, the Cougars continued to play stifling defense, with the offensive support finally coming in the 86th minute. After a corner kick by Zamora, Walker drilled the ball in to tie the game.
"Overall I am pleased about our performance and very happy that we had the ability to overcome an early 0-2 deficit, especially considering we are playing without at least four starters," said Bush.
The match wrapped up preseason play for the Cougars and the squad will open the 2011 regular season schedule with the Texas Longhorns on Monday, Aug. 22 at 7 p.m. at Robertson Stadium.
