HOUSTON - The University of Houston tennis team captured its fifth-consecutive victory with a 5-0 sweep of Arkansas-Little Rock Sunday afternoon at John E. Hoff Courts. The Cougars improved to 12-6 overall this season, while the Trojans fell to 10-8 on the year.
"I'm excited that we went 5-0 over our spring break," said head coach John Severance. "We now have two weeks until we play again, and we just need to stay healthy and focus on Southern Miss. These scores are just a reflection of how tough we are when we're at full health, and I'm ready to start the month of April and get ready for the Conference USA Tournament."
Celia Fraser and Giorgia Pozzan opened doubles play for Houston with a dominating 8-0 sweep at the top spot to improve to 6-1 this season together, while the Cougar tandem of Bryony Hunter and Dionne Sanders remained unbeaten with an 8-5 victory at the No. 2 position to clinch the match's first point.
Joanna Kacprzyk kicked off the singles portion with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Andrea Steen-Rosten at the No. 5 slot, and Pozzan followed with a 6-3, 6-2 defeat of Rebecaa Van Den Houte at the No. 3 position.
Hunter captured the match point by downing Veronique Luksich (6-0, 6-3) at the top spot, while Fraser rounded out the Houston scoring with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Yana Kakovkina at the No. 2 position.
The Cougars return to action to play host to C-USA foe Southern Miss on April 3 at 10:00 a.m.
