Houston Tennis Tops Southern Miss for Sixth-Straight Win

HOUSTON - The University of Houston tennis team returned from a two-week layoff to top Southern Miss by a score of 5-2, Sunday at John E. Hoff Courts. The Cougars reeled off their sixth-straight win to improve to 13-6 overall and 2-1 in Conference USA action.
After getting swept in doubles play to begin the match, the Cougars won five of the six singles matches against their C-USA foe for the 5-2 victory.
"Doubles play didn't turn out exactly how we planned, but I give Southern Miss a lot of credit, because they came out and took it to us," said head coach John Severance. "I challenged the team before we began singles play, and I'm proud with how we responded."
Giorgia Pozzan led off singles action with a 6-3, 6-3 defeat of Asa Bengston at the No. 3 position to improve to 13-5 on the season, while Dionne Sanders churned out her seventh-straight victory with a straight-sets rout of Shannon Rogers at the bottom spot to put the Cougars ahead, 2-1.
Joanna Kacprzyk also clinched her seventh-consecutive victory by topping Zoe Lee by a score of 6-3, 6-2 to improve to 14-4 overall, and Celia Fraser secured the Houston win by downing Stephanie Dellocono at the top spot by a score of 7-6, 1-6, 6-4.
Bryony Hunter rounded out the Houston scoring with a hard-fought 1-6, 7-6, 6-4 triumph over Vroni Van Berlo at the No. 2 position.
The Cougars will play host to three matches next weekend, beginning at noon on Saturday against St. Edward's.
