The 23rd-ranked University of Houston softball team rattled off four consecutive innings of scoring to blast Sam Houston State, 9-1, Friday afternoon in Waco, Texas at the QTI Powers Invitational. It was the rubber match of the three consecutive games between the Cougars and Bearkats with UH posting two of those wins.
Senior pitcher Amanda Crabtree improved to 6-0, throwing all six innings and fanning 11 of 20 batters faced. She allowed just one hit in the victory. Melissa Gregson and Jennifer Klinkert were responsible for three RBI apiece. Klinkert hammered two home runs in the game, tying a career-best performance vs. Prairie View A&M last season.
The Cougars (10-3) jumped on the board in the third inning with a pair of runs on Gregson's double. Klinkert led off the inning reaching base on an error and Katy Beth Sherman followed with a bunt single. The duo was driven in with Gregson's hit to left center.
One inning later, UH added three runs on back-to-back homers to increase its lead to 5-1. Ashleigh Jones laced a double to left center scoring Brooke Lathan who boarded base on a walk to begin the inning. During the next at bat, Stesha Brazil hit a solo home run, her first of the season, followed by Klinkert's one-run home run.
The scoring continued in the fifth with the Cougars' third home run of the game when Holly Anderson led off the inning with a solo shot to right field. UH then led 6-1.
The sixth and final inning yielded three insurance runs, two on Klinkert's second home run of the game, fourth of the season.
The Cougars played back-to-back games on Friday dropping a 1-0 decision to Central Arkansas in the nightcap. Senior Donna Bourgeois got the loss on the mound, but pitched a four-hit complete game, striking out seven.
The squad returns to action at the QTI Powers Invitational on Saturday with a single game against Louisiana-Monroe at 12:30 p.m. The tournament wraps up on Sunday with a pair of contests against Louisiana-Monroe and host Baylor.
